It is natural ventilation that manages in general in the same wide enough shaft allowing the upcoming airflow (warm) and descending airflow (cold) to cross itself.
Please look at the solution implemented in the exemplary project "BedZED" (Beddington Zero (fossil) Energy Development 2001)

A heat exchanger positioned at the level of the exit shafts allows using the calories of the extracted air to warm the incoming air.
